2006 - Emerging Economies: Risks and Opportunities for Sustainable Development

The Environment Foundation's 2006 Consultation turned to emerging economies.

The rise in economic and political significance of rapidly developing so-called 'emerging market' countries such as India, Brazil and China presents both risks and opportunities for sustainable development.

Questions addressed at this consultation, which focused particularly on China, included:

  • What could be the global impact of emerging economies by 2025?

  • What new challenges does the rise of emerging economies create for business?

  • What role does civil society play in driving sustainable development in emerging economies?

  • What are the most salient sustainable development challenges facing emerging economies?

  • What are the most critical outstanding capacity gaps in emerging economies from a sustainable development perspective?
