2001 - Changing Values

In encouraging corporations to drive towards sustainability objectives and targets, we must focus not just on changes in technology and management systems, but also on capturing the hearts and minds of their employees, customers and investors. Only then will it be possible to embed the necessary changes in corporate values and cultures.

The challenge is to help individuals and companies develop cultural frameworks and decision-making processes that encourage the convergence of personal and business values. The scale of this challenge was illustrated during the Foundation’s Tenth Consultation, where a survey by the international student organisation, AIESEC, showed that 66% of business students thought they would sometimes be forced to do things as managers that would conflict with their personal values.

The Changing Values theme was debated at the first of a new series of Windsor Consultations in December 2001.

Some of the issues addressed included:

  • How are values derived?
  • Why is there an apparent mismatch between values in the home and the workplace?
  • How are mindsets changed, ie what are the triggers and are the effects lasting?
  • How do values spread, both within and between generations?
  • What role do the media play in shaping values?

Sir Geoffrey Chandler gave a speech at the 2001 Windsor Consultation on Challenges of Globalisation: The Flaw of the 'Business Case'.
