On the 22nd March 2022 the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sous, announced that he is to champion intergenerational fairness. This announcement took part in an event hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, who have been working with the School Of International Futures (SOIF) on getting policy-makers to promote inter-generational fairness.
As part of legislative scrutiny, the intergeneration assessment method developed by the SOIF will be used to train civil servants in Portugal. Applying this assessment tool across different organisations in Portugal is one of the strategies used to ensure that intergenerational fairness is achieved. Heavily involved in this process, Cat Tully, a previous FDSD Trustee, has presented the assessment tool in the event at 5 hours 25 minutes.
As a central interface between the assessment and society, a national dialogue “Portugal We Want” is funded and run by the Gulbenkian Foundation’s President. This progress is in line with a poll published for the event which found that 77% of respondents agree that a new intergenerational fairness institution is needed in Portugal.
