“Transition Network is a charitable organisation whose role is to inspire, encourage, connect, support and train communities as they self-organise around the Transition model, creating initiatives that rebuild resilience and reduce CO2 emissions.”
The Transition Network was founded by Rob Hopkins on whose ideas the idea of Transition initiatives were based. Initially the focus was on local communities building resilience and moving away from oil reliance and contributions to climate change. Following the recent financial crisis, there has been an additional focus on resilient finance with for example the first Transition Town of Totnes introducing its own currency, the Totnes pound.
Transition initiatives around the world have to meet certain criteria. As of 2013, they cover 43 countries and over 1100 initiatives, for example, Transition Town Minami-aso in Japan.
The Transition Companion: making your community more resilient in uncertain times (2011), by Rob Hopkins summarises the approach and informs and inspires developments.
