#Todayfortomorrow is a campaign promoting The Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill. The campaign, founded by Lord Bird, is led by The Big Issue. The campaign aims to put long-term thinking at the centre of UK policymaking to protect the wellbeing of current and future generations. In February 2020, #Todayfortomorrow and FDSD launched the Campaign for a UK Future Generations Act in parliament. FDSD worked with the Big Issue to craft the Bill and is on the advisory group for #Todayfortomorrow.
The campaign states that legislating The Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill will require the UK Government to:
“ 1. Work to prevent problems, including the climate crisis, poverty and pandemics from happening, and not just deal in emergencies;
2. Give current and future generations a voice in decision-making, and protect them from global threats;
3. Deliver a new, sustainable vision for the nation that prioritises our environmental, social, economic and cultural wellbeing.”
The bill had its third and final reading in the House of Lords on the 4th February 2022 and has now been passed to the House of Commons (link news). By ensuring that public bodies make decisions that consider future generations, the Bill acts as a preventative measure aiming to protect the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
