On May 24th, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation published: “The first evidence-based briefing of how the outcome of the EU referendum on June 23 could affect people in poverty”. The paper was written to ensure that places and people with the lowest incomes are not ignored in any decision to leave or remain within the EU.

The briefing considers available evidence relating to work, housing, the economy and welfare. Their conclusions include: potential savings from EU membership which could be spent on poverty reduction; the loss of EU support for some of the most deprived parts of the UK; potential increases in the cost of imports arising from a currency devaluation; or the need to consider the effects of changed terms of trade on different parts of the UK.
