The Foundation’s Roots

The Foundation’s Roots stretch back to 1983. Our start-up funds came from the international insurance industry, in what was probably the City of London’s first major initiative designed to address the environmental agenda.

Environment and sustainable development
The Foundation’s central aim is to protect and improve the environment. That said, we acknowledge that this is no longer a single issue agenda and that it must increasingly be addressed in the broader context in which environmental decisions are made. As a result, the Foundation’s activities now encompass the environmental, social and economic dimensions of the triple bottom line of sustainable development.

Shaping the business agenda
Recognising that business and industry have been – and in many cases still are – a major part of environmental problems, but also have the potential to provide solutions that benefit us all, the Foundation seeks to engage those who shape the business agenda. So, from an early stage, we have worked with government, business, consumers and investors, encouraging bridge building and constructive solutions to environmental problems. In this way, the Foundation has acted as a catalyst at the leading edge of the business/environment interface, for the benefit of both present and future generations.

Sowing seeds
From the outset, the Foundation has been in the business of sowing seeds, both in the markets and in the minds of decision-makers and opinion-formers. It did this first through its award schemes for industry, aiming for replication of the best technologies and practices. In the early days it also provided seed corn funding for a wide range of initiatives. Its Windsor Consultations acted as seedpods, helping to set and disseminate the sustainable development agenda. Most recently, two consultations on Democracy and Sustainable Development have inspired the Foundation to make this important topic the main focus of the next phase of our work.
